00 QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked

01 THE WORK

Is this AI art?

Not in the sense you may mean. No diffusion model — Stable Diffusion, Midjourney, DALL·E — touches this artwork. A Claude Opus model reads your two names, reflects on their phonetic structure and cultural origin, and emits a structured composition spec: geometric primitives, layout, palette, mood. A separate deterministic renderer then executes that spec as pure arithmetic. The shapes come from your names; the renderer paints them identically on every machine.

The result is closer to generative design than AI image generation — a program, not a sampler.

02 UNIQUENESS

Will our poster be unique?

Yes — within the constraint that the algorithm is deterministic. The same two names, the same optional caption, and the same treatment always produce the same poster. Two couples with identical names and the same treatment would receive the same composition; two couples with different names receive different compositions.

In practice, the name space is large enough that collision is rare. Each edition carries a sequential number that records the order in which it was produced.

03 EDITING

Can we move shapes or change colours?

No. The shapes are derived from your names and are never editable — that is the founding constraint. The only choice you make is picking one curated treatment (a palette plus a type choice) from the small set the algorithm offers. Everything else — canvas, geometry, layout, mood — is fixed.

There are no sliders, no free colour pickers, no regenerate button. The algorithm is the designer; you are its subject.

04 PROVENANCE

What is the certificate of authenticity?

Every order includes a numbered A5 certificate of authenticity. For physical prints it ships in the box; for digital orders it is available as a download.

The certificate records the two names, the edition number, the palette and treatment, the composition facts, and the spec hash. The spec hash is the provenance: a deterministic fingerprint of the exact composition that lets us reproduce the poster without any ambiguity. It is not a cryptographic signature — it is a content identifier, like a Git commit hash.

05 MATERIALS

Paper, sizes, framing.

Wall prints are available in four sizes on two fine-art papers:

  • A4 & A3 — Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308gsm (100% cotton-rag, acid- and lignin-free, matte)
  • A2 & A1 — Hahnemühle German Etching 310gsm (textured intaglio surface)

Framed versions are available for A3 and A2. Frames are black, sourced from the same print lab, and ship assembled. A4 is not offered framed.

Matte cotton-rag holds colour the way a gallery wall does — soft, deep, unlit. Bold screen tones settle a shade quieter on paper; that is the fine-art register, not a fault. Your print preview is shown soft-proofed on the paper you choose.

06 SHIPPING

Where do you ship, and how long?

We ship across the EU. Delivery typically takes 5–10 business days from order. Prints are produced and dispatched from Prodigi's UK and NL print labs; the package arrives white-label with no supplier branding.

UK delivery is paused until we complete UK VAT registration. Leave your email on the waitlist and we'll write the moment we open.

07 DAMAGE

What if the print arrives damaged?

Contact us at hello@ligature.press with a photograph of the damage. We will arrange a free reprint and reshipment. Because the spec is cached, the replacement is identical to the original — same composition, same edition number, same grain.

08 EDITIONS

What does the edition number mean?

Each order receives a sequential edition number — № NNNN — assigned the moment the payment clears. Numbers run forward only, from 0001. They are a record of sequence, not a scarcity device: Ligature is an open edition. There is no premium tier, no founders series, no backwards-numbering to make earlier prints feel rarer than they are.

The number appears on the print itself (bottom edge) and on the certificate.

09 SCRIPTS

Our names aren't in the Latin alphabet.

The renderer supports essentially any living script. Arabic, Devanagari, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Gurmukhi, Gujarati, Kannada, Thai, Hebrew, Korean, Japanese (hiragana, katakana, kanji), and Chinese are all covered via a vendored Noto fallback font set. The treatment typefaces handle Latin, Greek, and Cyrillic; any glyph they lack is drawn from Noto — per-glyph, so mixed-script pairs (e.g. a Latin and a Korean name) render without compromise.

10 RETURNS

Can we return a print?

Each poster is made to order and is personalised to your two names — it cannot be resold. We do not accept returns for change of mind. If your print arrives damaged or materially different from what was shown at checkout, we will reprint it at no charge (see question 07).

If you have a concern not covered here, write to hello@ligature.press.
